Now the type of Software I am going to talk about, are something you don’t really expect them to exist (unless you already know them, which I think at least half of them must unknown to you), they might come to you by surprise.
This is the third part of the series “Open Source and Free Software List”, if you haven’t already, you might like to read the previous two:
Now in the third Part, there are 10 less known software. Some of them are very useful for some specific purposes, some of them increase your productivity to a great extent, rest of them simply have some cool features which you don’t know you need until you use them, once you have, then you can’t live without them.
1. F.lux:
If you work on a computer for a long time every day, you might feel discomfort to your eyes and find it hard to fall asleep at night right after using it. It happens mostly because of the blue light that your screen emits. Use F.lux, it changes the colour and brightness of the screen depending on the time of the day. It is highly recommended if you use computer for long for your eyes’ sake.
Get F.lux. [Windows, Mac OS, Linux]
Though don’t forget to turn it off while doing any colour sensitive work like using Photoshop.
2. Launchy:
Launchy is an Open Source tool for launching any program super fast. But you actually can do more than that, with few keystrokes you can open specific file or folder, perform calculation, kill processes and much other stuff. All you have to do is be a little innovative and think about how you can make it more useful for you, and save a lot of time and energy.
Get Launchy. [Windows, Mac OS, Linux.]
3. Wizmouse:
If you are using a PC with anything lower than Windows 10 (Win 10, Mac and Linux already have the feature), Wizmouse is a must-have program for you. You will realise how useful it is once you use it. All it does is, it allows you to scroll non-active Windows on your PC. You just keep the cursor on an inactive window and turn the cursor wheel, it scrolls the page for you.
It is very useful when you are working on multiple programs for example when you are working on MS Word and browsing the web at the same time. It saves lots of effort and energy for a long run.
The official download page is here. [Windows]
4. Greenshot:
Greenshot is a very best tool for taking screenshots. Windows’ Snipping Tool is already doing it for you but Greenshot makes the process 100 times efficient. The great features what it has, are- the screenshots instantly get copied to the clipboard, instant emailing option, option for using all the apps that can modify the photos and so on, just you have to install proper plugins you need, while installing Greenshot it provides options for those. Explaining usefulness of this app is beyond the scope of this small paragraph, it is something I always wanted. If you like to take lots of screenshots then get it and find yourself what it can do for you.
One more powerful thing it does is it takes screenshots of a scrolling window (which means you can take a screenshot of a whole long page in one shot) in Windows Explorer, though it is not very useful for me until it allows taking scrolling screenshots on Google Chrome and Mozilla Firefox.
Get Greenshot here. [Windows]
5. Puush:
Puush is another useful program which does a pretty similar job to Greenshot, takes screenshots. But what extra thing it does is instantly after taking a screenshot, the image gets uploaded to your account in Puush, and a link to the image is copied to your clipboard, it does that almost automatically, all you have to do is drag and select the portion of the screen. The feature is pretty useful if you share lots of screenshots with your friends, work collaboratively, and share things on all other online platforms.
You can even get the link to other files of small size, it is very light weight, smooth.
Really nice App for you if your job needs sharing of screenshots, get it here. [Windows, Mac OS]
6. ClipX:
Another cool Open Source gem, ClipX allows you to copy and store multiple texts in the clipboard and lets you paste whichever you want to. It does the job pretty fast and easily, making work less boring when you have to do the type of work where you have to do lot copy and paste job.
Install ClipX. [Windows]
7. Sandboxie:
This program creates a virtual sandbox where you can download any virus suspected files, run a scan there to check the file is infected or not, without the fear of any harm from the program to your OS.
Download Sandboxie.
8. Eraser:
You know that deleted files can easily be recovered by some dedicated software like Recuva. But, if there are some super sensitive files that you want to destroy forever, now what you do need is Eraser, another Open Source program. It overwrites deleted files several times so that no recovery software can recover them back. You can run wipe off to the free space and the recycle bin.
Get Eraser. [Windows]
9. Ophcrack:
Ophcarck is a free and Open Source Windows password cracker. Check out all its features on their website and download it if you need, here is the link. It runs on Windows, Mac OS X and Linux.
10. Chromepass:
It does the job of showing all the usernames and passwords you have saved on your Google Chrome web browser. It should ideally be used in case you have forgotten the usernames and the passwords. This software can be used for evil purpose too. You can get all the passwords of your friend within just a few seconds.
Get this evil here. [Windows]
I am not promoting this evil purpose, rather I’m making you aware of the things that your bros can do to you.
Well, that’s all I have got for you for this part of the series. Hope you find some of them very useful for you and which you had an idea of before reading this post.
The intention of the whole blog is to help the creative people who want do stuff on a computer and online medium. Though these three posts of the series don’t contain any software that helps for doing creative stuff, these will be a guide the people for finding the common software that they might need to run computer smoothly and when there is any sort of problem with their PC, they know where to find the solution.
The next part will be very exciting one for me, as it will be on something of my interest. In the next part, I will be talking about some software to be used for a creative purpose like making digital art, editing photo or video and sound and much more. So, if you are into this kind of things, make sure to visit the blog next week.
You might want to read “Why you should use Open Source software and Support the Open Source movement”.

So, that is all for today, I will be back next week with a goddamn article.
